In a Bad Mood? - Maybe It's the Lights
Now comes the art of lighting a scene to set a particular mood. First consider your video format, with the advancement of HD technology comes the increased resolution wow effect. The other side is HD will reveal your mistakes easier and make them more obvious to your audience. When shooting with HD cameras the sensitivity shows everything from your actor having too much oil on their body to a flawed background. SD will produce a quality shot when lit properly, but will not produce high-resolution shots similar to HD. It is important to keep your resolution in mind when deciding on how to light your scene. Your lighting style is a very powerful tool that prepares the audience for what is coming. Using your lights can help to set your viewer mood and mold what they should expect. Things you should consider when setting your mood is what each lighting component will be used to accomplish. The first fact that we use to set our mood would naturally be the brightness of the scene, which is our key light. High-key light signifies, happy, action and high energy, while low-key lighting prepares the audience for a dramatic intense scene. Don't forget eye light, this is the reflection of the light in your subject eye. This is needed to allow the actor or subject to effectively express his or her mood to the audience. Diffused lights are usually big and will cover a wider area that produces a softer look. Hard lights are smaller whose focus can be controlled easier and should be used to highlight your subject, but will reveal any flaws. If you need to show details in your shot a hard light would be your choice if you do not want details revealed a soft light would be the way to go. Contrast is basically the depths of your colors use your fill light to control your contrast and measure it by your shadows. High contrast should be used to set a powerful tone, while low contrast will communicate more of a depressing feeling. The trick is to use your contrast and key lights in conjunction to achieve your mood. Contrast will mainly be controlled on your camera. The saying every rule is meant to be broken is so true, for every standard we just went over you can find a successful example proven otherwise. Video production is an art; keep that in mind when producing your films. I strongly suggest understanding the foundation of anything before you try to make changes. You should know the function behind every light and then independently experiment to recreate, or introduce your signature groundbreaking style. The most important fact to get your desired look is experimentation. I cannot say this enough experiment, experiment and experiment.
